The definition of astrology

What is it?  If you search for a few minutes on the internet you will find a number of different definitions.  Unfortunately, most of them wrong.

They are wrong in the sense that does not reflect accurately the way in which many astrologers conceptualize and then define its own theme.  This is often because the definitions of astrology are written by people who have little or no familiarity with the subject, and thus are written from the perspective of an outsider.

The purpose of this article, then, is to outline a definition of astrology which is broad enough to encompass most or all views of the subject by real doctors.   It will then be contrasted this definition with some of the most common ones that exist today.

Astrology is the study of the correlation between celestial and earthly events.

That's all.  Now, one could argue that the definition is too broad, but I would say that it lacks specificity makes precision.  This here:

Most contemporary definitions of astrology assume astrologers to posit some sort of celestial force that exerts an influence on earthly events, on account of the things certain astrological alignments says that they correlate with.  The problem with this is that such definitions of astrology ignore a discussion of long standing within the astrological community about whether celestial objects that is used in astrology act as signs or causes of things that correlate with here on Earth.

In fact, I would say that most of the modern Western astrologers today argue that movements of celestial stars and planets actually correlate with terrestrial events, but do not cause these events to be held.  Or in other words, celestial objects act as signs of events that correlate with, but does not cause.

This is usually conceptualized in terms of a modified version of the theory of Carl Jung's "synchronicity", where there may be an acausal connecting to objects or events in the time which consists of equivalence in meaning or symbolism.    Thus, for example, while an astrologer might say that the 10 House of a natal chart Mars might "suggest" or "means" someone who has a career as an athlete or someone who is in the army, which does not necessarily mean that they believe that Marte causes that the person may have that path.  Instead, the planetary locations at the time of the birth of a person simply reflect or symbolize different facets of his life and future.

Signs Versus causes in astrology astrological TraditionWestern originated in Mesopotamia as a form of divination, and as a form of divination, astrology was conceptualized as the attempt by the gods to communicate their intentions to humanity through celestial signs and omens.  Despite the celestial omens they thought to convey messages about the future, this does not necessarily mean that it is conceptualized as a cause of these future events to be held.   Francesca Rochberg, one of the top scholars in the field of Mesopotamian Astrology today, explains

The relationship between the phenomenon and the anticipated event has aroused much debate, the consensus is that the relationship is not causal, but most of the simple association or correlation order.  The Declaration of omen would therefore interpreted not as x causes and, but if x, (which also) and.  (Francesca Rochberg, the heavenly writing, Cambridge University Press, 2004, p. 58)

The astrological tradition, sometime during the late Hellenistic period, introduced a new conceptualization of astrology that you see the planets as efficient cause of earthly events.  However the earliest conceptualization of based on the sign of astrology still persists as competing or alternative viewpoint and this seems to they have led to a debate within the astrological community.  For example, in the i century CE Seneca recognized both positions during the course of making some brief observations where criticized the usefulness of astrology:

New Blog on return of Saturn

I have recently launched a new blog devoted to Saturn returns called stories of return of Saturn.

The purpose of the blog is highlight real-life stories about what happens when people go through their returns of Saturn.

Most of the stories tend to focus on the back first Saturn, which is produced for everyone between the ages of 27 and 30, since it is usually the most important, although there are also some stories about the second and until third Saturn return as well.

One of the things that interests me is to study the return of Saturn as part of a larger cycle, which includes major turning points in the cycle, as the wax of the Plaza, the opposition and the waning square.

For example, recently he wrote an article on the blog showing how j. k. Rowling finished writing the first Harry Potter book during his first return of Saturn and had subsequently released the last book of the series right at the time of their opposition of Saturn.   Elsewhere Leisa Schaim wrote an article talking about a man who had his first glass of wine at the age of 30, and then, in the course of the next 30 years began his career as a winemaker during the key turning points in this cycle of Saturn.

Interview with Danny Boudai, Director of the five day star

Last year I heard that a new film with the theme of astrology called five star day recently had premiered at a film festival in California, and I am pleased to announce that the film finally opened in theaters today.

In the film the main character is on a mission to disprove Astrology by comparing their experience of a particular day with the other three people who were born at the same time.  There is a more detailed summary of the film and a trailer in the previous article I wrote about five star day.

I had opportunity to see the film recently and was really impressed by the way that portrayed it astrology in a light something more accurate than I normally used to seeing in films.

Only in the first minutes of the movie alone, it gives a more precise definitions of astrology that I think that I've seen in any film to date:

Modern astrology is based on the astrological chart, which is essentially a snapshot Galactica of the universe and the alignment of the planets and stars in relation to its location on the Earth at the exact moment of your birth.  The main belief is that this information is then interpreted using the twelve zodiac signs as indicators of behavior to predict individual personality traits.

As an astrologer had a series of questions after seeing the movie, and I was fortunate enough to raise with the writer and director of the film, Danny Boudai.

The community of astrology blogs has grown much in recent years that seems something difficult to keep abreast with what everyone is doing.  It is difficult to sort through all the articles that constantly posted on various blogs of astrology, and I know that I am missing some interesting things as a result.

To help alleviate this problem, I created a page of blogs of astrology in Reddit recently where people can post links to interesting articles that have been found.  Then, readers have the ability to vote on articles and discuss them, it will help to ensure that the really important positions not unnoticed the community in general.

This will be useful for those who read blogs of astrology because it will enable them to find interesting articles that otherwise could not found.  Will also provide an excellent opportunity for bloggers to promote their work and get more exposure for your material.

United Astrology Conference, to be held in may

The United Astrology Conference, also known as UAC, is set to be held in New Orleans just two months from now, May 24-29, 2012.

UAC only occurs every few years, when all major astrological organizations together and pool their resources in order to host a Conference of huge, with hundreds of thousands of attendees and speakers.

The last United Astrology Conference held in Denver in 2008 and was a really amazing Conference, so expectations are high that this will happen.

Organizations that sponsor the Conference are the National Council of research Geocosmic (NCGR), the international society for Astrological Research (ISAR), astrological Association Networking (AFAN), the Council of Vedic Astrology (CVA) and the American College of Vedic Astrology (ACVA).

Personally I look forward the Conference because there is a great lineup of speakers, and there are a lot of conferences I am interested in attending.  In more normal astrological conferences there could be only one or two conferences that really want to attend, but with UAC you have so many conferences will envelope in so many different areas that the real problem becomes to choose between them.

I think the organizers made a mistake by not creating a specific clue for traditional astrology, which is somewhat disappointing, but the track of the story that is being organized by Nick Campion appears now will have a decent mix of technical and historical discussions, and there are a number of traditional conversations scattered in the other tracks.

They will be presenting two conferences in the Conference, entitled Hellenistic Astrology as the study of fate and another entitled the theory and practice of Arabic parts or lots.

Regulus AwardsOne of the highlights of each United Astrology Conference is Marion D. March Regulus Awards, which is a ceremony where the members of the astrological community are recognized for the contributions that have been made in the field.

Regulus Awards nominations are carried out several months in advance, and the members of each of the sponsoring organizations are able to cast their vote, with the results announced at the ceremony during the UAC.

Regulus Awards have been going on since 1989, and because UAC is one of the only cases where a large portion of the professional astrological community met in the same place, the prize is easily the most prestigious that exists today in the field.

There are five different categories that are voted in:

Nomination of discovery, innovation and ResearchEducationTheory and UnderstandingCommunity ServiceProfessional ImageThe I feel stronger about this year is the fourth category, where Alois Treindl has been nominated for an award for service to the community.  Treindl is the founder and director of the company Astrodienst, which is mainly known for its Web site that offers free astrological calculation, www.astro.com.

Anyone who has read my blog awhile knows that I am a big fan of Astrodienst, as its calculation of free astrological services and other resources were instrumental in the early years of my studies of astrology.  Without your Web site do not think would have been able to move forward as quickly as I did, and I think that this is true for many other people who are now in the field.

Therefore, even if it is only for calculation of astrological services free only I think that Alois Treindl deserves a Regulus Award for service to the community, taking into account the effect of your company to help new people to enter the field.  But not all Astrodienst has done for the community.  Swiss, which has been the standard for the majority of astrological software programs to calculate charts also produce the ephemeris.

More recently, in 2009, known as AstroDatabank birth data collection was acquired and then proceeded to publish the complete database online for free on their website.  They have also taken steps to expand and improve the database, ensuring that it will continue to grow in the future.  You can not underestimate the importance of his work here, from the collection of data of birth has far-reaching for the viability of our field implications, as it is what many of us depend on research in natal astrology.

So for these reasons that I will vote by Alois Treindl for Regulus Award for community service and would encourage others to do the same.

Another EventsOther that Regulus Awards, there will also be a lot of other events at the Conference.   All organizations are celebrating pre-conference workshops on various topics, community-oriented, and there are a number of other technical workshops as well.  Michael Lutin is organizing a game for entertainment and there is some kind of bowling night, although I am sure that most of the best entertainment held during some of the parties in the suites later in the night.

Everything should be a great Conference, and I am really looking forward to it.  I hope to see you there!

Vedic Astrology - More On Saturn And His Aspects

In Vedic astrology, the three most outer planets of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each cast a special aspect. The word aspect is actually not very accurate. Like many Western words that try to convey Eastern concepts, the actual word is "drishti" which means "look" or "glance". For you see, in Vedic thinking, culture and cosmology -- the planets are beings of intelligence that have been around since time immemorial. Their movements and energies are not just relevant as "archetypes" - they represent real forces, eternal forces of the universe that transcend our 80 to 100 year lifespan. They connect us to that eternal, cosmic nature that we forget here on the flat Earth in which we live in our day to day lives. Each of these planets are bodies of light that can "see" in different directions. Saturn sees 3 signs in front and 10 signs in front. That is his special look. This look conveys the essence of his nature.



With Saturn occupying Leo he will be "watching" the sign of Libra and the Sun of Taurus for the next two years, both ruled by Venus. If anyone has planets in Sidereal Libra or Taurus, Saturn will also be watching them. Regardless, wherever those houses fall in your Sidereal / Vedic chart will be under his watchful eye. Saturn aspects create trouble by shattering our illusions around the things he sees. Once, Lord Shiva and Parvati after having their first child Lord Ganesh, held a party and invited all of the gods, Demi Gods and Planets to participate. It was a beautiful celebration except one of the planets, Lord Saturn, seem to be kind of depressed and moping in the corner (go figure!) - in fact he would not even look at the beautiful Ganesh. Now, the planets are powerful -- but they are not as powerful as the gods, especially the mighty Lord Shiva and Mother Shakti, Parvati.



So the great goddess upon seeing Lord Saturn unmoved by the festivities asked him why he was not participating. Saturn replied "Great Goddess, your child is beautiful and I do not want my looks to ruin that beauty - a glance from me is not always welcome". "Nonsense!", declared Parvati, "I insist you look at my child immediately!". At which time Lord Saturn gaze gently at the beautiful Ganesh. No sooner did Saturn look at Ganesh, then did the beautiful boys head falloff!! One look from Saturn decapitated Ganesh. Lord Shiva went to find a suitable replacement head and was said to have found the head of one of Lord Indra's elephants - and so Ganesh was given this elephant head.



And so it is said that the Saturn aspects can be more difficult than the Saturn conjunction.



So this means, for the last couple of years Saturn has been looking at the signs of Sidereal Virgo and Aries. Does that speak to anyone?

The fascination with astrology - how good?

In the 1920's, there was a big sensation in the US. Two sisters had photographed fairies flying around flowers in their garden. It was an unbelievable event. The two gave interviews and talked stuff. Very often we have astrologers predicting events. Most people love the opportunity to get one's palm read by an astrologer. Believe the stuff or scoff at it. The Basics of Western Astrology Explained

Introduction:

This article covers the basics of Astrology and how they are inter-related. Astrology is defined as 'the art or practice of determining the supposed influences of the planets and their motions on human affairs and human disposition'. From this practice a horoscope can be produced - a diagram (or chart) of the relative positions of planets and signs of the Zodiac at a specific time, usually the time of birth. A forecast can then be produced.


The Zodiac:

Western Astrology originated way back, around 500 BC, with a concept called the Zodiac being developed. This comprised of an imaginary sphere surrounding the earth, which followed the path of the Sun through the constellations during the year. The Zodiac was split into twelve sections, each named after the specific constellation noted in that area.


Elements:

Many ancient philosophies used a set of classical elements to explain the way nature behaved. Each sign was connected to one of the classical elements (fire, earth, air, or water) and was also related to a region of focus; social, personal or universal.

* Water signs are related to growth processes, identification and emotion. In tandem with the other elements, water feels that fire will make it boil, air will evaporate it, but earth will shape and channel it.

* Fire signs are related to action, passion, and energy. In tandem with the other elements, fire feels that earth will smother it, water will drown it, but air will fan and enliven it.
